The obverse of the 2024 1 oz coin features the historic Lady Liberty motif that has appeared on these coins for for more than three decades. Renowned artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens originally created the portrait of the goddess at the personal request of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905. At that time, President Roosevelt wanted the coins to reflect his Nation’s identity and growing place on the world stage.
Lady Liberty is depicted with her hair blowing in the wind, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the sun shining in the background. She is surrounded by 50 stars and the word ‘LIBERTY’. The issuance date, '2024', appears in the lower right corner, while a miniature representation of the Capitol Building adorns the lower left.
The reverse of the gold coin depicts a close-up portrait of an American Bald Eagle, America's national bird. Inscriptions are ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’, ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ ("Out of many one"), ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’, ‘50 DOLLARS’, and ‘1 OZ. FINE GOLD’. Designer Jennie Norris, who forms part of the Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP), created the design, which was then sculpted by the medallic artist Renata Gordon.
Struck at the Mint’s West Point facility, the 2024 American Eagle contains one troy ounce of 91.67% 22 carat gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver for a gross weight of 1.09 troy ounce, all weights and contents authorized by Congress and backed by the Mint.
