In the late 1960s, when South Africa's annual gold mine output averaged 75% of total output in the western world, the promotion of gold was considered vital, following the final collapse of the gold standard in 1971. The Krugerrrand was the chosen vehicle to encourage individual ownership of gold. After more than 50 years and over 52 million ounces sold, the Krugerrand remains the world’s most traded and trusted bullion coin.
The reverse of the 1 oz Krugerrrand was originally designed by the renowned sculptor Coert Steynberg and depicts one of South Africa’s national animals: the Springbok (or Antidorcas marsupialis). By using modern techniques and approaches, the Mint's designers were able to re-introduce and enhance details that had been lost over the decades. The result of this renewal is a design with increased definition and artistic vibrancy. These improvements can be noted in the sharpness seen, for instance, in the Aloe claviflora plants and the landscape. The slender, graceful Springbok antelope is surrounded by the words ‘KRUGERRAND’ and ‘FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD’, with the mintage year, ‘2024’, on either side.
The observe features the effigy of Paul Kruger, the first President of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR). This design by Otto Schultz is surrounded by the country’s name in two of its 11 official languages, Afrikaans and English: ‘SUID-AFRIKA’ and ‘SOUTH AFRICA’.
