The Krugerrand 1/2 ounce gold coin is an iconic bullion piece first minted by the South African Mint in 1980.
The name “Krugerrand” combines Paul Kruger, former President of the Republic of South Africa, with the rand, the nation’s currency. The rand also references the Witwatersrand, meaning “the ridge of white water”, a region historically renowned for its rich gold deposits.
The reverse of the 2026 1/2 ounce Krugerrand, originally created by celebrated sculptor Coert Steynberg, features the graceful Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), one of South Africa’s national animals. Using modern minting techniques, the South African Mint has restored fine details that had softened over decades, resulting in greater clarity, depth, and artistic vibrancy. Enhancements include sharper depictions of the Aloe claviflora plants and surrounding landscape. The Springbok is encircled by the inscriptions “KRUGERRAND”, “FYNGOUD 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD”, and the date “2026”.
The obverse shows the portrait of Paul Kruger, designed by Otto Schultz, with the country’s name inscribed in two of South Africa’s eleven official languages: “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.
The South African Mint produces bullion Krugerrands in partnership with Rand Refinery, the world’s largest integrated precious metals refining and smelting complex, renowned for its integrity and quality. The 1/2 ounce Krugerrand is struck from .9167 fine gold, alloyed with copper, which gives the coin its distinctive rose-gold appearance and enhanced durability.
With its robust composition, timeless design, and strong international liquidity, the 2026 Krugerrand 1/2 ounce gold coin constitutes a reliable and enduring investment.
