The 50 Gold Mexican Pesos Centenario is one of the most visually striking gold coins in the world. First issued in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain (1821–1921), this remarkable coin embodies national pride, historical significance, and exceptional artistry.
In 1910, as Mexico celebrated the centennial of the start of its War of Independence, a monumental column was erected in Mexico City topped with the statue of “El Ángel de la Independencia” (The Angel of Independence). Standing 6.7 meters tall and crafted in bronze and gold, this sculpture represents the Winged Victory, the Greek symbol of the goddess Nike. In her right hand, the Angel holds a laurel crown, symbolizing Victory. In her left, she carries a broken chain, symbolizing Freedom. This powerful imagery inspired the obverse design of the Centenario.
The obverse features the majestic Winged Victory standing before the legendary Mexican volcanoes Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl. The face value “50 PESOS” appears prominently, alongside the gold content “37.5 Gr. ORO PURO”, confirming the coin’s substantial weight in pure gold. The date of issue is displayed next to “1821”, honoring the year of Mexico’s independence. Notably, 1943-dated coins feature a distinct variation in which the gold content inscription appears on both sides of Winged Victory, making them particularly interesting to collectors.
The reverse showcases a classic depiction of the Mexican golden eagle clutching a snake, surrounded by the inscription “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” (“United Mexican States”). Interestingly, the 50 Pesos, 10 Pesos, and 5 Pesos gold coins all feature the eagle facing forward, an antiquated version of the coat of arms developed in the French Style in the late 1800's.
The Centenarios were minted primarily between 1921 and 1947. From 1949 to 1972, nearly four million pieces were re-struck, most bearing the date 1947, adding to the coin’s unique history.
Containing 37.5 grams of pure gold (1.2057 ounces), the 50 Pesos stands out as one of the heaviest and most visually commanding bullion coins on the market. Its blend of substantial gold content, artistic beauty, and historic symbolism has earned it strong demand from investors and collectors worldwide.
Individual coins come in a protective plastic bag.
