Umicore is an internationally recognized industrial leader. It traces its history back to a single day, December 17, 1805. On that date, Napoleon Bonaparte granted Jean Dony stewardship of the Vielle-Montagne mine on what is today the border between Germany and Belgium. Over the 19th Century, mining and smelting companies joined together and then expanded into Africa, opening a mine in the Congo in 1906. By the end of the 20th Century, it had sold its mines in order to focus on refining precious metals and clean technologies such as recycling, emission control catalysts, materials for rechargeable batteries and photovoltaics.
Umicore has been refining gold, silver, platinum and palladium in North America for over 100 years. In addition to supplying the precious metal industry in the jewelry, dentistry, chemical and industrial sectors, its Markham, Ontario refinery produces an impressive array of gold and silver investment bars, such as this 100 grams gold bar.
This is, quite simply, a beautiful piece. The Umicore name and logo is at the top followed by FEINGOLD 999.9, and the weight, shown as 100 g. Each bar’s unique serial number is found engraved at the bottom. It is enclosed in clear plastic, and includes its Certificate of Assay. Truly a magnificent ingot, its brilliant shine must be seen and smooth lines and surprising weight held, to be adequately appreciated. Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, Umicore serves the North American market from its plant in Markham, Ontario (established in 1914) which provides assaying and refining services for gold, silver, platinum and palladium, and its USA sales office in Attleboro, MA. Its European division, based in Hanau, Germany, sells precious metal ingots for investment purposes on that side of the ocean. In this decade, Umicore has been ranked as one of the Most Sustainable Companies in the World, topping the list in 2013.
