In the late 1960s, when South Africa supplied around 75% of the Western world’s annual gold production, promoting gold ownership became a national priority. The Krugerrand was created as the ideal vehicle to encourage private ownership of physical gold.
The name “Krugerrand” blends Paul Kruger, former President of the Republic, with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The word also evokes the Witwatersrand, meaning “the ridge of white water,” a region renowned for its exceptionally rich gold reserves.
Since its introduction in 1967, the Krugerrand has preserved its original design, with each new edition displaying the current year.
The reverse of the 1 oz Krugerrand, originally created by renowned sculptor Coert Steynberg, features one of South Africa’s national emblems: the Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis). Thanks to modern minting techniques, the design now displays enhanced clarity and detail, particularly in the rendering of the Aloe claviflora plants and the surrounding landscape. The elegant Springbok is encircled by the inscriptions “KRUGERRAND” and “FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD”, with the year “2026” divided on either side of the animal.
The obverse shows the effigy of Paul Kruger designed by Otto Schultz. The portrait is framed by the country’s name in two of its eleven official languages: “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA.”
Produced in partnership with the Rand Refinery — the world’s largest integrated precious metals refining and smelting complex — the Krugerrand contains one ounce of .9167 fine gold, alloyed with copper for added strength and an unmistakable rose-gold coloration.
With its legendary durability, timeless design, and global liquidity, the 2026 Krugerrand 1 oz gold coin remains one of the most sought-after bullion coins among investors and collectors worldwide.
