There is no gold coin from the US Mint more popular and sought after on an annual basis than the American Gold Eagle. The 2021 American Eagle 1 Ounce Gold coin —struck in 22-karat gold— is an exquisitely crafted coin cherished by investors around the world.
2021 marks the Anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program. The Mint first issued the gold coins in 1986 as both bullion and collectible products. In honor of the 35th anniversary, the Mint has released new reverse designs for the American Eagle Gold coins in midyear 2021.
The obverse continues to bear versions of the historic designs that have been featured on these coins for more than three decades. Renowned sculptor and artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens originally created his likeness of Lady Liberty at the personal invitation of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905. President Roosevelt wanted the coins of the time to reflect his Nation’s identity and growing place on the world stage. Saint-Gaudens’ rendition, shown on the 2021 American Eagle Gold coins, is a full-length Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, on a stunning mirror-like background. Liberty is ringed by 50 stars and the word LIBERTY. The date of issue, 2021, appears on the lower right. The Capitol Building is depicted in miniature to the lower left.
The 2021 new reverse design depicts a portrait of an eagle. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM ("Out of many, one"), IN GOD WE TRUST, 50 DOLLARS, and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD. Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer Jennie Norris created the design that was sculpted by Mint Medallic Artist Renata Gordon.
